What to Expect When Hiring a House Cleaner
Everything you need to know before your first professional cleaning — from what's included to tipping etiquette.
In this article
Hiring a professional house cleaner for the first time can feel uncertain — what will they do, what should you prepare, and how do you know if you got a good job? This guide covers the basics.
What's typically included in a standard clean
A standard residential clean usually covers:
- Vacuuming and mopping all floors
- Dusting surfaces, ceiling fans, and light fixtures
- Cleaning bathrooms (toilets, sinks, showers, mirrors)
- Kitchen surfaces, appliance exteriors, and sink
- Making beds and changing linens (if linens are provided)
- Emptying rubbish bins
Not usually included: inside of ovens, inside of fridges, laundry, exterior windows, and garages. These are typically available as add-ons.
Deep clean vs. standard clean
A deep clean is more thorough and takes longer. It's ideal for move-ins, move-outs, or homes that haven't been professionally cleaned in a while. Expect a deep clean to cost 1.5–2× the price of a standard clean.
How to prepare for your cleaner
- Tidy clutter before they arrive — cleaners clean, they don't organise
- Secure pets in another room or outside
- Make sure they can access your building and any locked areas
- Leave a note about areas that need special attention
What questions to ask before booking
- Do you bring your own supplies and equipment?
- Are you insured against accidental damage?
- What's your cancellation policy?
- How do you handle complaints if I'm not satisfied?
Tipping etiquette
Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. A common amount is $10–$20 per cleaner per visit, or 10–15% of the service total. For a first-time clean, consider tipping if the result exceeded your expectations.
